Introducing Cris Vanyó | Cos a Cos
Cris Vanyó, a school teacher and accomplished rock climber who produces wine in the converted garage beneath his family home in his native Otinyent, Valencia. Cos a Cos is the product of Cris’s progression from hobbyist distiller to winemaker through friendship with Catalan legends Laureano Serres (Mendall) and Josep Serres (Portes Obertes). His first barrel was vinified in Laureano’s cellar in 2015, and the two continue to collaborate today.
Terra Alta has become his adopted home since he arrived as a teacher in 2015. Still, in 2019, he was compelled to return to Valencia to champion the region’s local and often forgotten varieties. Cris now harvests primarily from long abandoned and untended vineyards, fostering old, native vines (some of which pre-date the phylloxera crisis), following the same principles he has since the beginning: properly-ripened grapes, picked by friends and neighbours. All plant cover is maintained, increasing biodiversity and controlling erosion, and in the cellar, manipulation is kept to the minimum, with nothing added or removed.
Cris’s energy and excitement for the winemaking process, vine to bottle shows through in everything we have had the pleasure of tasting, whether it be the single bottle experiments with Eau de Vie, his tiny productions of Rancio which fill a variety of barrels dotted around his garage, or the range of wines that are raised in the array of vessels he is inquisitive enough to experiment with. This is a project built from true passion and curiosity, and we are as excited as Cris is to share as many of them as possible with you all.
Limited quantities of a selection of wines from Cos a Cos are available now.
